It’s always exciting to see new faces getting involved in ParaQuad Tasmania’s programs.

This year, our Boccia Program officially made its way to the North West of the state and has quickly become a popular addition to the Wheelchair Sports scene. Terry Tavner, a double above-knee amputee, is one new participant.

“Back in June this year I was at a disability expo in Devonport, and I bumped into (current boccia athlete) Jamie Fergus. He asked me if I had played boccia before and mentioned that I hadn’t. Jamie said if I was interested to pop over to the ParaQuad Tasmania stall and talk to Trent, which I did.”

ParaQuad’s Physical Disability Sports Officer (NW) Trent Johnson told Terry about a new program just about to start in Devonport.

Terry (shown below) went along to give it a go.

“From the first time trying boccia I knew it was the game for me as I enjoyed it straight away. I had found a sport that is enjoyable and one I feel that I can be competitive in.”

That competitive streak made for a pretty ambitious prediction.

“It must have been on the third or fourth time going. I was practicing with Jamie and Rohan and they had the white ball totally surrounded with all their balls touching it.

“I made the call that I was going to lob my (red) ball up and land it on top of theirs – even though I had never done such a shot like that before. I took my time and when I let it go, I watched as it sailed through the air and landed on top and kissing both their balls and the white.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes, it was such an awesome feeling.

“I look forward to many more shots like that or at least trying to!”

ParaQuad Tasmania’s Boccia Development Officer, Kathryn Broomhead, describes the moment it happened.

“… the place erupted.  I think you will agree it’s a ripper.”

Terry plans to continue his journey with boccia.

“I know it will take a while to improve my game to what I would like it to be. I would love to start playing tournaments once I get a lot more practice under my belt.

“Boccia is definitely a sport that I would recommend. As someone who thought because of my many physical disabilities there weren’t any sports that I would be able to do – I was so wrong.”
